An increasing number of you have been asking about a book club…so we’ve decided to trial a new one!

  • Book club will be run IN STORE from 7pm on the last Tuesday of each month from July to October in 2017.  See Important Dates below.


  • Attendance will cost $10 per month.

  • Numbers are limited to 20 people per month so booking is essential.
    The booking system will have a waiting list function, however, and in the event there is sufficient demand, we may choose to run an additional book club evening in any given month. Those on the waiting list will be informed if this occurs.

  • Bookings for all months will open from the end of May, and will close at the end of the month prior to each session (with the exception of the 4-month booking option which will close at the end of June).

  • Bookings will be managed online through  Click HERE to head to the Bookings Page, select the session you wish to book and follow the simple steps to complete the booking process.

  • There is no obligation to attend more than one month.  There are booking options for both month by month as well as booking all 4 months together.  Note that the option to book all four months will close at the same time as the closing date for July bookings (30 June).

FORMAT – What will be read and how?

  • The titles being read each month will be forthcoming or new releases of independent adult fiction.  Some months this may mean you’ll have access to new books even prior to their release date!  We are very grateful to our publishers for making this possible and for being as excited about the Between Friends BC as we are.

  • The format for the Between Friends BC will be some large group discussion facilitated by Farrell’s staff, as well as breaking into smaller groups each focused on a different title. In any given month each attendee will read/keep one book and be exposed to other additional new or forthcoming titles.  We will provide discussion questions as a starting point for the small group component should attendees need some help to get discussion going, and staff will also float between small groups to assist.

  • Books will be available for collection 4 weeks prior to the relevant book club session.

We’ll be seeking feedback from all attendees and if the concept is well received we will look at running the Between Friends Book Club as a regular feature of our Events program.

Do I have to commit to coming to more than one month? 

No, you book each month you wish to attend separately – there is no obligation to attend more than once, but if you are keen you can obviously book for every month right from the start.  Remember that the bookings for each month will close one month ahead.

I want to attend all four months – can I book this up front? 

Yes, there is an option for a 4-Month pass which will book you into all four months. Simply select this session time on the TryBooking page.  Note that bookings for this option will close at the same time as bookings for the July session – on Friday 30 June.

How much does it cost to be a book club member? 

You will need to pay $10 for each month you wish to attend.  This fee secures your place and helps to cover the cost of refreshments on the night.  The book you will receive to read each month will be free of charge (courtesy of our publishers).

How long will I have to read the book?

Books will be available for collection 4 weeks prior to the relevant month.

I don’t know anyone else who wants to come along – can I come on my own?

Of course!  As the name suggests, we see Book Club as a great opportunity to meet and make new friends!  But you are of course welcome to come along with friends you already know.  You may not end up reading the same book as them and you will certainly get an opportunity to meet new friends.

How much will the books cost? 

The books are provided free of charge by our supporting publishers.  The only cost you will incur is the $10 membership fee each month.

Which book will I be reading?  

Titles being read each month will be announced a month prior to the session in which we will be discussing them.  Each book club member will read a single title each month, which will be randomly assigned.  It will be available for collection in store from 4 weeks prior to the session date.  The titles will cross a variety of different genres.

Can I choose which book I am assigned?

We are deliberately choosing to ‘randomly’ allocate books to book club members. The idea of the book club is to expose our friends to books and authors they may not usually pick up. Part of a good book club discussion is being able to discuss the reasons we liked a book, as well as the reasons we found them challenging.

What types of books will be included?

We are choosing well written independent adult fiction titles for our Book Club each month. There will not be biographies, non-fiction, fantasy, children’s/teen or straight crime titles included.

How do I book my place? 

All bookings will be handled through the online site  You will be able to follow booking links from this page or the Events Calendar page of our website.

I don’t have a credit card / am not comfortable booking things online – can I book any other way? 

You can still elect to pay in store (cash or EFTPOS) and our staff will guide you through the TryBooking process at the time.  Your details must be entered in the TryBooking system for us to be able to manage bookings for the event.  Your personal information will not be retained by unless you choose to do so for ease of use in future bookings.  Information about the TryBooking site can be obtained here, including a link to their Privacy Policy.

I have lost my ticket / did not receive my confirmation email from TryBooking – what should I do?  

You can check your Junk mail folder to see if your confirmation email is there, but there is no need to have a ticket on the night. We will have the Booking List for each month and will be in contact with you directly to ensure you have collected your book and are kept informed of all details for the month for which you have booked.
