Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein recounts the chilling tale of Victor Frankenstein, an ambitious young scientist consumed by his obsession to uncover the origin of life. In his laboratory, he constructs a being from exhumed body parts and animates it, only to recoil in horror from his monstrous creation. Isolated and reviled, the creature craves connection and ultimately seeks revenge, turning on his maker. Their relentless chase traverses mountain peaks and arctic wastes, concluding in devastation and regret. Interweaving Gothic horror with probing philosophical themes, Shelley’s novel interrogates ambition, alienation, and the profound consequences of defying natural boundaries in the pursuit of knowledge.
Frankenstein is the fifth in the Gothic Chronicles series, which includes Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dante’s Inferno, and a volume of Edgar Allan Poe’s best-known short stories.

About the Author: Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was born on August 30, 1797, into a life of personal tragedy. In 1816, she married the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, and that summer traveled with him and a host of other Romantic intellectuals to Geneva. Her greatest achievement was piecing together one of the most terrifying and renowned stories of all time: Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Shelley conceived Frankenstein in, according to her, “a waking dream.” This vision was simply of a student kneeling before a corpse brought to life. Yet this tale of a mad creator and his abomination has inspired a multitude of storytellers and artists. She died on February 1, 1851.
