How to get more reading done 101: Audiobooks

Audiobooks are being consumed by Australians with increasing gusto, with many readers who prefer print books finding the benefits of also being able to ‘read’ more by listening while in the car, walking the dog, pottering in the garden or getting through household chores.

While audiobooks were previously available in CD format, as the use of CD players has declined, listening to audiobooks can now be used via apps on your smartphone.

At Farrells we have been very happy to discover and partner with a great app – Libro.fm.  Libro.fm is an employee-owned Social Purpose Corporation that shares profits from your audiobook purchases with the local independent bookshop of your choice, giving you the power to keep money within your local community.  When you start a membership with Libro.fm you can choose to support us here at Farrells or share the love around with many other participating local bookshops.  Libro.fm offer two options for purchases. Firstly you can purchase audiobooks on a book by book basis, without committing to an ongoing membership cost. Alternatively, you can pay a monthly membership fee that includes 2 free books. As many of our staff now use Libro.fm to listen to audiobooks, you can access our reviews on the app. Check out Kate’s review of Dervla McTiernan’s What Happened to Nina?.

If you’re new to audiobooks – come and ask our staff how to get yourself started with Libro.fm, or check out this more detailed ‘how to’.

If you’re currently using Audible and keen to hear how Libro.fm differs, here is a handy comparison list.

As far as we’re concerned, the only downside to audiobooks is the same as for the print equivalents – how to choose your next great ‘read’!  So many amazing titles to choose from, so little time..

Malcolm Knox
The First Friend

We were lucky enough to hear Malcolm speak about this new novel at our mid year booksellers’ conference and it’s fair to say that the excitement from those who had already read it was significant.  Set in Georgia in 1938 – ‘a gangster republic’ – the novel looks at the impact of the Russian revolution on two foster brothers / friends, who have risen to very different stations in life.  A portrait of friendship under pressure, the events in the story are based around the real event of Stalin’s visit to Georgia, his homeland, and it looks at both the real and imagined aspects of a totalitarian state.  Malcolm described the book as a black comedy about how the little guy can win and conquer the tyrants.  If you’re after a suspenseful read with some laughs and history along the way, this is your book!

Even the worst person has a best friend. The Soviet Union 1938: Lavrentiy Beria, ‘The Boss’ of the Georgian republic, nervously prepares a Black Sea resort for a visit from ‘The Boss of Bosses’, his fellow Georgian Josef Stalin. Under escalating pressure from enemies and allies alike, Beria slowly but surely descends into murderous paranoia. By his side is Vasil Murtov, Beria’s closest friend since childhood. But to be a witness is dangerous; Murtov must protect his family and play his own game of survival while remaining outwardly loyal to an increasingly unstable Beria. The tension ramps up as Stalin’s visit and the inevitable bloodbath approaches. Is Murtov playing Beria, or is he being played? The First Friend is a novel in a time of autocrats, where reality is a fiction created by those who rule. Reflecting on Putin’s Russia, Trump’s America, Xi’s China and Murdoch’s planet Earth, it is at once a satire and a thriller, a survivor’s tale in which a father has to walk a tightrope every day to save his family from a monster and a monstrous society. Where safety lies in following official fictions, is a truthful life the ultimate risk? A chilling black comedy, The First Friend imagines a gangster mob in charge of a global superpower.

FICTION

Highway 13 by Fiona McFarlane ISBN:9781761067013
‘One rainy Friday evening in the winter of 1993, a taxi swept through the streets of East Melbourne, on its way from the city to Richmond. That year was one of the few remaining when a great deal was known of the world but not yet so much that the world had become over-known. Small gaps remained …’

Edinburgh, 1916: A rich Scottish industrialist, Thomas Wrenfether, impulsively embarks on a mad scheme to build a paddlesteamer out of dubiously sourced European cherrywood on the other side of the world, in booming Melbourne, Australia. But nothing goes according to plan.

Melbourne, 1993: Martha is a clever, lonely and frustrated lawyer. One night, on impulse, she stops at a strange pub in Fitzroy, The Cherrywood, for a bottle of wine. The mysterious building and its inhabitants make an indelible impression, and she slowly begins to deduce odd truths about the pub.

A long-time fan of Jock’s writing, I was eager to see what this new one had to offer, and I was quite surprised by what I found. Starting his writing career in crime, then political suspense, his most recent offerings have been historical fiction, with the Furneaux Islands Trilogy.  In some ways this new novel is a blending of these previous styles, with one unusual new addition – a dash of magical realism. The story weaves in fascinating historical elements, with some very quirky and fantastical elements, set in the mid 1990s. I can honestly say I’ve never read anything quite like it, but I found it highly engaging and enjoyable – definitely one to add to your list for something a little unexpected!

NON-FICTION

Lonely Planet The Joy of Quiet Places by Lonely Planet ISBN:9781837582662
When we cook for others, or ourselves, the deepest hunger we feed is love.

In her new memoir, respected chef and paddock-to-plate pioneer Annie Smithers answers the question she is asked most often: why cook? Annie takes us on a journey through every significant kitchen in her life, both domestic and professional, sharing with engaging honesty her personal development, her surprisingly complex relationship with food, and the lessons she has learned along the way to find her culinary niche at the famed du Fermier restaurant in country Victoria.

A journey to self-discovery, one recipe at a time.

Having had the pleasure of meeting Annie with her first book “Annie’s Farmhouse Kitchen” I was very inspired by her love of cooking, coupled with her passion for cultivating her land to grow delectable ingredients. With her paddock to plate ethos, what she grows on the land dictates the menu at her esteemed Trentham restaurant du Fermier. Her new book “Kitchen Sentimental” follows closely to the format of her last book “Kitchen Confidential”, full of great stories, genuine warmth and many hearty recipes included within. You feel like she has opened her front door and welcomed you to her house

But what will she do when everything gets out of control, all in a jumble, and her characters collide causing the most enormous tantrum to explode. This isn’t what she wanted at all! How on earth will she find sense in all this chaos? Her friend Alphabet knows exactly what to do and sings a song that brings calm and order to Dictionary’s pages once again. The much-anticipated new picture book from the bestselling and award-winning creators of A Child of Books.
From the amazing duo who brought us A Child of Books several years ago, comes an absolute JOY of a picture story book.  The combination of Winston’s typographical art and Jeffers’s more colourful chaos, the artwork is truly phenomenal and the story thoroughly engaging for both the young and young at heart.  Be sure to check out and read the Dictionary definitions in close detail – each entry has been ‘personalised’ for the book and the whimsy is just wonderful.  A true collector’s edition – this is one of those cases that demonstrates that picture books are definitely NOT just for kids…

Christian White in conversation

Thursday 24 October 6:30pm – Bookings essential

We are thrilled to be welcoming local crime author Christian White to Farrells in conversation this October. After three years with his focus on screenwriting projects for Netflix and Paramount, Christian has returned with another gripping crime novel The Ledge. When human remains are discovered in a forest, police are baffled, the locals are shocked and one group of old friends starts to panic. Their long-held secret is about to be uncovered. It all began in 1999 when sixteen-year-old Aaron ran away from home, drawing his friends into an unforeseeable chain of events that no one escaped from unscathed. In The Ledge, past and present run breathlessly parallel, leading to a climax that will change everything you thought you knew. This is a mind-bending new novel from the master of the unexpected. In store 24 September, and to celebrate the release Farrells is giving away 2 tickets to our Christian White event with any purchase of The Ledge.
